IDT Energy Tips for Indoor Comfort with Savings

Certainly, there are some times when it’s so hot that you’ve just got to use your air conditioning.  However, there are a number of key ways to make your home comfortable without using that air conditioning system. Here, IDT Energy offers tips that will add to your comfort during the hot months – and put money back into your pocket.

Use awnings and shrubbery to shelter sun-exposed windows and to cut down on the sun’s rays.  On the hottest and sunniest days, keep your blinds and drapes closed.  During the heat of the day, keep your windows closed and then open them at night to let in the cooler breeze.

While this may sound counterintuitive, a well insulated attic can actually help you to save in the summer.  Attics get very hot in the summer and this heat is then passed to the rest of the house.  If you insulate the attic well, it protects the entire home from excessive heat in the summer (and from the cold in the winter).

Finally, make sure that your roof ventilation is good enough so that you prevent heat buildups during the summer (and moisture buildups during the winter).  These minor changes will make a big difference in your comfort during the summer and in your electricity bills!
