Energy Saving Tips From IDT Energy

Everyone agrees that it is great to use our resource as efficiently as possible. Here are some practical tips on just how to go about saving, not only electricity and natural gas, but also money.

1.    Keep your residential heating system in tip top shape with regular inspections. A well-running heating system saves energy and money.
2.    Replace the filter on your furnace every month. Clean filters increase efficiency and save money.
3.    Think about installing a furnace thermostat timer. By lowering the temperature of your home when you are away you can save lots of fuel, and money, too.
4.    Weather-stripping and caulking around doors and windows will keep the expensive heat in and the cold air out.
5.    Have you thought about installing a fireplace in your home? Consider a propane fireplace instead of a wood burning one. Propane burns more efficiently and distributes the heat more evenly in the room.
6.    Want to save about 10% or more on what you pay to heat water? Consider lowering the thermostat on the hot water heater down to 130 degrees Fahrenheit instead of the standard 140 degrees. It is safer, too.
7.    To increase the life of your water heater and get it working more efficiently drain out the water twice a year to remove lime deposits and sediment.
8.    Install low-flow shower heads in your shower to reduce water usage by about half, with no effect on water pressure.
9.    Get those dripping faucets fixed. If you have a leak that could fill a coffee cup up in 10 minutes, then you are wasting 3,200 gallons of water in a year. That’s a lot of water!
