What Is Energy Star?

When you go to purchase light bulbs, appliances, and other electrical items you may see the Energy Star label on them.  What exactly is Energy Star, and is it worth paying attention to?  Energy Star is a program that was first conceived by the US Environmental Protection Agency in 1992.  Its goal is to identify and promote products that serve to be energy efficient.

If an appliance has an Energy Star label, this doesn’t automatically mean that the product is better than another one.  It does mean, however, that the product meets strict energy efficiency guidelines.  Appliances that are rated Energy Star are, typically, 10-20% more energy efficient than are non-rated models.  This means that you both save money on energy, and help the environment, when you purchase items with this rating.

IDT Energy encourages customers to find ways to save money each month on their energy bill.  Energy Star is one such way to do so.
