Energy Audit with IDT Energy

Doing your own energy audit to find areas where you can save money in the home is a great idea.  When doing your own audit, keep a checklist of places that you’ve already inspected and problems you’ve found. This audit, with suggestions from IDT Energy, will help you to prioritize your needs and to create the best, and most efficient, upgrades.

The first item of business is to locate any air leaks that you have in the home.  By reducing drafts, you can save anywhere from 5% to 30% per year on your heating bills.  Check for gaps along the baseboards, junctures between the walls and the ceilings, and more.  See if any air is flowing in the electrical outlets, switch plates, window frames, baseboards, fireplace dampers, attic hatches and more.

Also inspect windows and doors for air leaks.  If you can see daylight around the edge of the door or window frame, then there is an air leak there.  You’ll want to caulk areas where there are air leaks, replace windows, and alter any area of the home where air is leaking.

Always remember to check your IDT Energy thermostat.
